Ways to Handle Stress & Be Happy & Healthy

Do you find that as this time of year approaches, everything seems to move faster and that same 24 just isn't enough? We are already such a busy bunch, so adding in anything extra to that to-do list can make things too stressful. While exercise is beneficial in many ways, there are other key elements to maintaining a healthful lifestyle. Here is a clue: work to live, don't live to work.

Yes, sertainly we all have to work, but what do we do with our downtime (I know everyone has some at some point). Some watch t.v., others go out with friends, shopping (this one's getting tougher to do), while the rest sit web-browsing on the net. All these activities are commonplace among us, but are we finding the serenity and healthful-happiness that we all have strived to achieve? Sometimes it's the small things we overlook that can make our lives easier.

First, look at your day on paper like an itinerary. You will see the tasks that must be done, then tasks that should be done, followed by something else you could get done. The first list is the only one that is vital, while the rest of your day is truly subjective. I know what you're thinking at this point, but here me out. If we take from this moment on to possibly the day after Christmas, and just re-prioritized things a bit, we might absolutely have a "glad holiday". This isn't something to practice daily, but rather choose a couple of days spaced out throughout your week, and fill that empty to-do list space with an activity you reeeaally like!

The key again is in simplicity, choose an activity that is simple and fun. Here are some ideas to get you started:Â

  • Forget the scale and keep a journal instead (you can log food and feelings at the same time!)

  • Take a hot bath and read by candlelightÂ

  • Dance and sing to holiday music

  • Meditate-find a space to be alone and quiet to practice

  • Go for a walk after dinner and talk with a loved one

In other words, stop once in a while, if even concisely, to really unwind, relax, and be fit for yourself!
