India is emerging rapid in the field of thoracic spine surgery. 60, 000 spine surgeries were performed in 2004 that matched international standards and were successfully performed by some of the best qualified spine surgeons of India in state of the art squeaky clean hospital facilities; all this at 20-30% of the cost in the European Union and North America. India also remains the preferred destination for a natural approach to health including Indian holistic systems of Ayurveda, Yoga and Siddha aside from Homeopathy. It has the widest mix of western and eastern medical facilities, with another billion dollars worth of medical infrastructure speedily changing the city’s skyline. Medical tourism is a unique venture facilitating individually customized, high quality, low cost medical care for thoracic spine surgery in India when you desire, without waiting, coupled with the joy of exotic retreats, sports for those so inclined, fine food experiences, art culture and music and for those who want to combine work and play- business opportunities galore. The spinal column is also called the vertebral column. The bones in the spine are called vertebrae (ver-ta-bray). The column starts at the base of the skull and continues to the pelvis. Alternate layers of bone (vertebrae) and cartilage (car-til-ledge, the intervertebral discs) stack vertically one on top of the other in the spinal column. The lattice-like structure of the cancellous bone (cancel-lus, the spongy interior) in a vertebra absorbs external pressure. The cartilaginous discs between vertebrae absorb and distribute shock and keep the vertebrae from grinding together during movement. The spine has four natural curves. Two are lordotic (lor-dot-ick) and 2 are kyphotic (kye-fah-tick). The cervical and lumbar curves are lordotic. The thoracic (thor-as-ick) and sacral (say-kral) curves are kyphotic. The curves help to distribute mechanical stress as the body moves. The thoracic spine is located in the chest area and contains 12 vertebrae. The ribs connect to the thoracic spine and defend many vital organs. Next is the Lumbar spine. Most people have five lumbar vertebrae although it is not uncommon to have six. The lumbar vertebrae are larger than the cervical or thoracic as this spinal region carries most of the body's weight. The sacrum and coccyx are uniquely shaped. India has one of the best pools of qualified professionals in every field of health care domain combined with world-class medical facilities comparable with any of the western countries. It has state of the art hospitals and the best-qualified doctors. The health care sector has witnessed an huge growth in infrastructure in the private and voluntary sector. The private sector, which was very modest in the early stages, has now become a flourishing industry equipped with the most contemporary state-of-the-art technology at its disposal. It is estimated that 75-80 per cent of health care services for thoracic spine surgery in India are now provided by private sector.
